Memory foam vs. gel: which cushion is right for you

Seat cushions generally come down to two materials — memory foam and gel — and the right choice depends less on which is "better" and more on how you sit and how warm you run.

How each one feels

Memory foam slowly molds to your shape, offering more contouring support the longer you sit — a good fit if you spend long, uninterrupted stretches at your desk. Gel cushions stay firmer and cooler to the touch, which suits people who run warm or move around more through the day.

Caring for either one

Both hold up well with a little regular care:

  • Remove and wash the cover on a cold, gentle cycle — avoid the dryer
  • Air out the cushion itself occasionally rather than sealing it away
  • Rotate or fluff it every few weeks to keep the support even

If you're not sure which to choose, think about temperature first — it tends to matter more day to day than the subtle difference in contouring.
