How to pick the right lumbar support for your chair

Lumbar support only works if it matches both your chair and your own lower back — a pillow that's perfect for one setup can feel like nothing at all in another.

Know your chair first

Chairs with a deep recline need a slightly firmer, more structured support to hold its shape. Chairs with a straighter backrest usually pair well with a softer, more adjustable pillow that can be repositioned through the day.

Know your own lower back

Watch for these signs that your current support — or lack of one — isn't doing its job:

  • You find yourself sliding forward in the seat by mid-afternoon
  • Your lower back aches specifically, rather than your whole back
  • You unconsciously prop a jacket or cushion behind you already

If any of these sound familiar, start with an adjustable lumbar pillow rather than a fixed one — it's easier to fine-tune to exactly where your back needs it.
